Rabbit Care Basics

Rabbit Care Basics

Owning a rabbit can be a lot of fun! Check out some of our Rabbit Care Basics:

Environment:

  • Use large dog crates or baby gates to help facilitate an enclosed, indoor environment for the rabbit.
  • Make sure the rabbit has an accessible litter box and enough space to move around/exercise.
  • Remove electrical wires and be wary of furniture that might be chewed up.

Diet:

  • Allow the rabbit to have unlimited access to hay and clean water.
  • Rabbits have a high metabolism!
  • Make sure to add green leafy vegetables to the rabbit’s diet, avoiding those with high sugar or calcium content, and limit the amount of pellets offered.
  • Treats are yummy, but give them sparingly!

Enrichment:

  • Rabbit teeth never stop growing! Chew toys help keep teeth comfortable and prevent boredom.
  • Make sure the rabbit has access to chew toys. Some examples include: wooden toys, chew ropes, woven grass toys and puzzle toys.
  • Regularly introduce new items to increase exploratory behaviors.

Health:

  • Make sure your rabbit is up to date on vaccinations.
  • Vaccinations and neutering/spaying your rabbit can lengthen the rabbit’s life.
  • Schedule regular checkups with your vet.
  • Rabbits can live around 8-12 years. Owning a rabbit is a commitment!

Volunteer of the Month: Kat Cassidy!

VOTM

January Volunteer of the Month: Kat Cassidy!

OC Animal Care is excited to announce Kat Cassidy as our Volunteer of The Month for January! Kat is an integral part of our foster program and frequently fosters cats and kittens in need.  In addition, to fostering, Kat volunteers as a Greeter Mentor, is part of our Dog Walking Team, and assists at off-site and special events. Recently, she has been instrumental in assisting with our newly re-booted Petco Cattery. By helping suggest kittens for the remote location and making flyers to highlight each kitten up for adoption at Petco! We are grateful for Kat’s dedication and passion for helping the animals at OC Animal Care! Our shelter pets are lucky to have such an amazing friend in Kat.

Interested in volunteering for OC Animal Care? We have modified opportunities available such as volunteering at our monthly Pet Food Pantry events or getting a group together to make no-sew kitten blankets. There are a number of things we always need help with each month! For more information, email our Volunteer Coordinator, Dawn, at Dawn.Maestas@occr.ocgov.com!

Pet Safety Tips: New Year's Fireworks

New Years Dog

With New Year’s Eve Festivities right around the corner, let’s take a look at some Pet Safety Tips Surrounding Fireworks:

  • Bring Your Pets Inside: The loud noises and flash of the fireworks can cause your pets to get scared and run away. Don’t bring your pet along to a firework display, they will feel more safe and secure at home
  • Microchip and ID Your Pets: Make sure your pet has visible ID tags and a microchip with updated information. If your pet is lost during the festivities, someone will be able to contact you if they find your missing pet.
  • Provide a Safe and Secure Space: Have a space designated for your pet such as a quiet room or crate. Provide them with treat toys such as a Kong to help keep them busy and distracted. Playing calming music or keeping the T.V. on can also help cancel out the loud noises.
  • Exercise Early in the Day: Walk and play with your pet to tire them out before the fireworks begin to help alleviate stress and avoid accidents. While Walking before and after festivities, watch out for leftover firework debris.
